EXPERIMENTS WITH NON-LINEAR FILTERS Discovering Excitable Regions

چکیده

We describe the development and implementation of a family of non-linear filters in which the non-linear term is given a variable recursive delay, in the context of a search for what we term an arithmetical instrument – an instrument whose design is founded on purely numerical models. Such filters are inherently unstable; we describe how they may be controlled, not only by the careful selection and constraining of parameters, but also by appropriate and idiomatic performance technique. We draw comparisons between these filters and the behaviour of acoustic instruments, which typically exhibit what we call excitable regions of sonic activity.

Utilizing Kernel Adaptive Filters for Speech Enhancement within the ALE Framework

Performance of the linear models, widely used within the framework of adaptive line enhancement (ALE), deteriorates dramatically in the presence of non-Gaussian noises. On the other hand, adaptive implementation of nonlinear models, e.g. the Volterra filters, suffers from the severe problems of large number of parameters and slow convergence. Nonetheless, kernel methods are emerging solutions t...

Holomorphic Filters for Object Detection

It is well known that linear filters are not powerful enough for many low-level image processing tasks. But it is also very difficult to design robust non-linear filters that respond exclusively to features of interest and that are at the same time equivariant with respect to translation and rotation. This paper proposes a new class of rotationequivariant non-linear filters that is based on the...

Refraction of waves in excitable media

Waves in chemically excitable systems can refract when impinging on an interface between regions of different reaction kinetics and/or diffusion constants. Here we study this process using the thin reaction-zone limit wherein the dynamics of the system can be reduced to the tracking of the boundaries between quiescent and excited regions. We show how to derive an integrodifferential equation fo...

Bloom-Based Filters for Hierarchical Data

In this paper, we present two novel hash-based indexing structures, based on Bloom filters, called Breadth and Depth Bloom filters, which in contrast to traditional hash-based indexes, are able to summarize hierarchical data and support regular path expression queries. We describe how these structures can be used for resource discovery in peer-to-peer networks. We have implemented both structur...
